Mt. Tomisu Park

Mt. Tomisu Park in Ozu, Ehime Prefecture, is a 130-hectare recreational park with deep historical roots. The land was donated by the Kato family, former feudal lords of the region, and was officially designated as a city park in 1959. The park's centerpiece is Mt. Tomisu, which rises 320 meters above the Ozu Valley. The mountain's resemblance to Mt. Fuji has earned it the local nickname "Ozu Fuji".

The park is most renowned for its spectacular azalea displays. Over 63,000 azalea trees bloom from late April to May, transforming the mountain slopes into vibrant pink hues. This makes it one of western Japan's premier azalea viewing destinations. During the blooming season, the park hosts azalea festivals with evening illuminations and food stalls that attract substantial crowds.

From the summit observation decks, visitors can take in panoramic views of the Ozu Basin and the Hijikawa River winding through the valley below. The park is accessible by bicycle all the way to the top, making it suitable for families and casual hikers. Facilities include children's playgrounds and multiple viewing platforms. The mountainside also houses Nyoho Temple, a significant Rinzai Zen temple with a Buddha Hall designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

The park is located at 903 Ozu, Ozu City, Ehime. From Matsuyama, take the JR express train bound for Uwajima and alight at Ozu Station, approximately a 40-minute journey. From Ozu Station, the park is about 10 minutes by car. Parking is available at Ozu Civic Hall and nearby lots. Admission is free to the park itself, making it an accessible natural attraction throughout the year.
