The irony is strong here
The winner (Saigo) looking one way, the losers (Shogitai) resting right behind him — the placement feels almost deliberate. It’s a strong reminder of how history treats the defeated side. The smaller stone in front (hidden by monks in 1869) adds another layer of secrecy and sadness. Very thought-provoking spot in the middle of a busy park. Highly recommend for anyone interested in Bakumatsu/early Meiji history. (Feb 2026)
