Takashima Castle Ruins

Takashima Castle Ruins stand on the shores of Lake Suwa in Nagano Prefecture, earning the distinction of being one of Japan's few surviving lakeside castle sites. Built in 1592 by Hineno Takayoshi, a retainer of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the castle was strategically positioned with its stone walls extending directly into the lake waters. This unique feature gave rise to its poetic nickname "Floating Castle" (Ukishiro), as the structure appeared to float on the lake's surface when viewed from certain angles.

The castle played a significant role during the early Edo period, serving as the administrative center for the Suwa region until 1875, when most of its structures were dismantled following the Meiji Restoration. Today, only the impressive stone walls and the restored three-story keep (tenshu), reconstructed in 1970, remain as testaments to its former glory. The original moat system that connected directly to Lake Suwa can still be traced, offering visitors insight into the castle's defensive water-based design.

Visitors can explore the castle grounds year-round, walking along the preserved stone ramparts that provide panoramic views of Lake Suwa and the surrounding mountain ranges. The reconstructed keep houses a small museum displaying artifacts related to the castle's history and the Suwa region's feudal past. The grounds feature seasonal cherry blossoms in spring and are particularly atmospheric during early morning hours when mist rises from the lake, recreating the floating castle effect that inspired its historic nickname.

Takashima Castle Ruins are located approximately 15 minutes on foot from Kami-Suwa Station on the JR Chuo Main Line, which connects to major cities including Tokyo (roughly 2.5 hours by limited express train) and Nagano. The site is also accessible by local bus services from the station. Admission to the castle grounds and keep costs ¥310 for adults, with reduced rates for children. Free parking is available for visitors arriving by car via the Chuo Expressway, with the Suwa IC exit being the nearest access point approximately 15 minutes away.
