Zenpoji Temple

Zenpoji Temple was established in 938 by the holy monk Myotatsu, who built a retreat named Ryuge-ji at the foot of mountains overlooking Tsuruoka in Yamagata Prefecture. This large Buddhist temple is believed to be where Naga and Nagi, two divine serpents reside, making it a sacred site for maritime protection. As one of the larger Soto Sect temples in the greater Yamagata area, Zenpoji features impressive wooden structures and serves as an important center for Zen Buddhism in the Tohoku region.

Thousands of fishermen and sailors from across Japan visit Zenpoji each year to pay their respects to the guardians of the ocean and pray for safe voyages and bountiful harvests. The temple's proximity to the sea and local fishing port makes it particularly special to the maritime community. The temple is notable for its tradition of dualistic worship, combining Buddhist practices with maritime spiritual beliefs.

Visitors can participate in traditional Zen meditation sessions and experience authentic Buddhist practices. The temple offers opportunities to observe and participate in the intricacies of Zen Buddhism and its relationship with cuisine and various aspects of traditional Japanese culture. Prayer sessions are available throughout the day, including morning prayers at 5:30 a.m., with reservations made at the reception desk in the main hall at least 20 minutes prior to each session. The temple's plain wood structures beautifully showcase complex carvings of flora and fauna.

Zenpoji is located approximately 20 minutes by car from central Tsuruoka. The temple is situated in Shimogawa Sekine in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. Public transportation options include local buses from Tsuruoka Station, though a rental car provides more convenient access to this mountainside location. While there is meant to be an entrance fee, payment arrangements may vary, so visitors should inquire at the reception upon arrival. The temple welcomes both individual visitors and small groups interested in Zen experiences.
