Eboshiyama Park

Eboshiyama Park is situated on a hilltop in Akayu, Nanyo City, Yamagata Prefecture, offering panoramic views over the Yonezawa Basin. Built by local residents between 1878 and 1910, this scenic park has earned recognition as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom viewing sites. The park's elevated position provides sweeping vistas of the surrounding countryside and serves as a peaceful retreat from nearby urban areas.

The park's primary attraction is its impressive collection of over 1,000 cherry trees representing 25 different varieties. Among these are weeping cherry trees said to be over 100 years old and somei yoshino specimens that are over 120 years old. During spring, these trees create a spectacular display that attracts visitors from across Japan. The cherry blossoms are illuminated at night, extending viewing opportunities into the evening hours. Beyond cherry blossom season, the park offers year-round natural beauty with vibrant summer foliage and autumn colors.

Located behind Akayu Onsen, one of Yamagata's leading hot springs that has been in operation for more than 920 years, the park complements the area's therapeutic hot spring culture. The nearby hot springs are said to have medicinal properties, making this destination ideal for combining nature appreciation with wellness activities. The park also features nearby Eboshiyama Hachimangu Shrine with the largest stone torii in the region.

Visitors can explore the park's walking paths that wind through different cherry tree varieties and scenic viewpoints. During the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, local product exhibitions and food stalls add cultural elements to the natural experience. The park's layout accommodates both casual strollers and photography enthusiasts seeking optimal vantage points for capturing the valley views and seasonal displays.

Admission to the park is free of charge. For transportation, the park is accessible via a five-minute taxi ride from Nanyō Shiyakusho Station, served by the Yamagata Railway's Flower Nagai Line. Alternatively, visitors using the Yamagata Shinkansen can take approximately 15 minutes by taxi from Takahata Station. Parking is available with an operation cooperation fee of 200 yen for regular vehicles and 1,000 yen for large vehicles.
