Fukkoji Makai Buddha, Bungo-ono

Fukkoji Makai Buddha is a monumental stone carving located at Fukkoji Temple in Bungo-ono City, Oita Prefecture. The carving depicts Fudo Myoo (Acala), one of the Five Wisdom Kings in Japanese Buddhism, completed in 1982 after 6 years of construction. The statue stands approximately 16.5 meters tall, carved directly into the cliff face. The project was initiated by Reverend Takemori Seikou, the temple's head priest.

The site is one of Kyushu's largest cliff-carved Buddha figures. Fudo Myoo is a protective deity depicted with fierce expressions and flames, believed to destroy obstacles. The Fukkoji carving shows the deity holding a sword and rope while seated in meditation. The temple grounds include stone steps, smaller Buddhist statues, and memorial structures.

Visitors approach the Buddha via stone steps from the temple entrance. The viewing platform provides proximity for observing details including facial features and symbolic attributes. The elevated position offers countryside views. The temple grounds include traditional buildings, gardens, and smaller stone carvings.

Access from Bungo-Ono Station on the JR Bungo Line, approximately 15 minutes by taxi. Limited public transportation makes rental cars or taxis necessary. From Oita City, drive approximately 45 minutes. From Kumamoto, use Kyushu Odan Expressway, exit Taketa Interchange, drive roughly 30 minutes.
