Hokkaido Greenland

Hokkaido Greenland was a theme park located in Iwamizawa City, Hokkaido, Japan, that operated from 1973 to 2006. The park was developed during Japan's economic boom as a family entertainment destination, featuring various attractions including roller coasters, a Ferris wheel, and seasonal events. At its peak, the park attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, serving as a popular recreational spot for families across Hokkaido.

The park covered approximately 30 hectares and was designed as Hokkaido's answer to mainland Japan's growing theme park industry. It became particularly known for its winter illuminations and summer festivals, which drew crowds during peak tourist seasons. The facility included multiple themed zones, amusement rides ranging from gentle family attractions to thrilling roller coasters, and extensive gardens that showcased Hokkaido's natural beauty during warmer months.

Following declining visitor numbers and increasing maintenance costs, Hokkaido Greenland closed its doors in September 2006. The site has since been abandoned and remains in a state of decay. The deteriorating structures and overgrown grounds have attracted urban exploration enthusiasts and photographers interested in documenting abandoned spaces, though such visits are both dangerous and illegal as the property is privately owned and off-limits to the public.

The former theme park site is located approximately 8 kilometers northeast of Iwamizawa Station. There is no official public access to the abandoned property, and visitors should note that trespassing is prohibited by law. The area serves as a reminder of Japan's economic bubble era and the subsequent challenges faced by regional entertainment facilities.
