Hokuryu Sunflower Village

Hokuryu Sunflower Village in Hokkaido represents one of Japan's most spectacular summer floral displays, transforming 23 hectares of rolling countryside into a vibrant yellow landscape. The project began in 1979 when a member of the Hokuryu Agricultural Cooperative was inspired after witnessing sunflower fields in Yugoslavia. The first Hokuryu Sunflower Festival was established in 1987, and has since evolved into one of Hokkaido's premier summer attractions.

The village showcases approximately 2 million sunflowers that bloom annually from late July to mid-August. Located in Hokuryu Town, a small community with around 2,000 residents, the sunflower fields dramatically outnumber the local population. The festival now attracts more than 200,000 visitors each year, making it a significant cultural and economic event for the region. The site has grown to become not just a tourist destination but a symbol of community pride and agricultural innovation.

Visitors can experience multiple attractions beyond simply viewing the flowers. A giant sunflower maze challenges guests to navigate through the tall blooms, while a sightseeing tractor bus called "Himawari-go" takes passengers on a 12-minute tour around the fields. The site features observation decks offering panoramic views, including a two-story platform near the parking area and a wheelchair-accessible mini deck. Students from Hokuryu Junior High School cultivate approximately 18 varieties of rare sunflowers from around the world in the World Sunflower Corner. Local specialties include sunflower soft-serve ice cream and roasted sunflower seeds available at food courts throughout the village.

Admission to Hokuryu Sunflower Village is free, though separate charges apply for specific activities like the maze and bicycle rentals. A cooperative parking donation system requests 500 yen for regular cars, 2,000 yen for large vehicles, and 100 yen for motorcycles. The village is positioned between Sapporo and Asahikawa, making it an ideal stopover during countryside drives.

From Sapporo Station, take the Lilac Limited Express or Kamui Limited Express to Fukagawa Station, which takes just over one hour, then catch a bus from Fukagawa Hospital to Hokuryu Junior High School stop and walk five minutes to the fields. By car, the location is approximately two hours from Sapporo New Chitose Airport or 90 minutes from Asahikawa Airport, with free parking available for up to 500 vehicles. Adjacent to the sunflower fields, Sunflower Park Hokuryu Onsen provides hot spring facilities in a Dutch-style hotel for those seeking relaxation after their visit.
