Iroha Yokocho is a narrow alleyway dining district located in the Kokubuncho entertainment area of Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. The name "Iroha" references the traditional Japanese poem used for learning hiragana characters, symbolizing the diverse variety of establishments concentrated in this compact space.
Iroha Yokocho preserves the intimate, nostalgic atmosphere of post-war Japanese alleyway culture that has largely disappeared from modern cities. The narrow passage stretches approximately 100 meters and contains roughly 30-40 small establishments including izakayas, yakitori stands, ramen shops, and specialty restaurants. Most venues seat fewer than 10 people, creating close quarters where casual interaction between strangers is common. The district survived the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and continues as a local institution showcasing traditional urban dining culture.
