Iwamura History Museum/Folklore Museum

The Iwamura Historical Museum opened in 1972 as Japan's fourth museum of its kind, preserving more than 800 years of Iwamura Town's history. Built on the site of the former residence of Iwamura's feudal lord, the museum stands strategically down the hill from the ruins of Iwamura Castle. The building's distinctive architecture features stilts, hipped roof, and white walls that give the impression of a castle, creating an atmospheric connection to the region's feudal heritage.

The museum serves as the cultural heart of this historic castle town in Ena, Gifu Prefecture. Iwamura Castle, also known as "Kirigajo," was one of Japan's three major mountain castles, and the museum contextualizes this remarkable 700-year history. The collection includes a diagram of the castle area and a hanging scroll by Sato Issai from 1718, along with swords, armors, government orders and documents that chronicle the area's political and social development.

Visitors can explore comprehensive exhibits covering the town's evolution from medieval times through the modern era. All exhibits are of high historical value, providing insights into the daily life, governance, and cultural practices of this mountain castle community. The museum effectively bridges the gap between the impressive castle ruins above and the preserved historic townscape below, offering essential context for understanding Iwamura's significance in Japanese history.

Access to the museum is convenient via public transportation. From Tajimi Station, take the JR Chuo Line to Ena (25 minutes), then continue by local transport to Iwamura. The site is approximately 20 minutes by car via the Ena Interchange on the Chuo Expressway. Free parking is available in front of the Iwamura Historical Museum. Admission costs 400 yen for adults and 200 yen for seniors, with children under junior high school age admitted free. Group discounts are available, and the museum is closed on Mondays.
