Oyama Sando

Oyama Sando is a scenic promenade approximately 200 meters long located in Nasushiobara, Tochigi Prefecture. This road is lined with maple trees approximately 90 years old that create a striking natural corridor leading to the graveyard of Marshal Oyama Iwao. The site is situated within Oyama Park and serves as both a historical memorial and a seasonal attraction.

Marshal Oyama Iwao (1842-1916) was a Japanese field marshal and one of the founders of the Imperial Japanese Army. The promenade was planted as an approach to his graveyard, honoring his significant role in Japan's military modernization during the Meiji Period. He especially loved Nasu and even owned a farm there, which explains the location of his memorial in this region.

The primary draw of Oyama Sando is its spectacular autumn foliage display. About eighty Japanese maple trees are planted on both sides of the walkway, forming a vibrant canopy overhead. The best time to see the autumn leaves is usually from mid-November to late November, when the maples reach their peak coloration. The tunnel of red and orange leaves creates a photogenic setting that attracts visitors throughout the autumn season. The promenade also displays fresh green foliage in spring, offering a different but equally pleasant atmosphere.

The site is located about 5 minutes on foot from JR Nishi-Nasuno Station, making it easily accessible for day visitors. The Nasu area is well-connected by rail from Tokyo, with the journey taking approximately 90 minutes via the Tohoku Shinkansen. There is no admission fee to walk along Oyama Sando or visit the graveyard. The location serves as a convenient stop for travelers heading to the broader Shiobara and Nasu resort areas in northeastern Tochigi.
