Shirakami Mountains

The Shirakami-Sanchi mountain range spans northern Honshu along the Sea of Japan, covering an area with altitudes ranging from 100 to 1,243 meters above sea level. Straddling the border between Aomori and Akita Prefectures, this vast natural beech forest was registered by UNESCO as Japan's first World Natural Heritage Site in December 1993. The Shirakami-Sanchi was formed when the Sea of Japan rose approximately 2 million years ago.

The Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage Property encompasses a wilderness area covering one third of the Shirakami mountain range, containing the largest remaining virgin beech forest in East Asia. Large areas of primeval natural forest, mainly Japanese beech, have remained in a "pure forest" state. The beech forest spans approximately 17,000 hectares (65 square miles) and has not been affected by human influence. This pristine ecosystem supports a diverse range of flora and fauna unique to the region. To maintain its natural untouched beauty, some areas have restricted admission.

The main attraction of Shirakami Sanchi are the various hiking trails that lead through the forests. The Shirakami area offers hiking options ranging from beginner-level paths to advanced, rugged trails, allowing visitors to choose routes suited to their ability and schedule, with all trails marked and guides recommended. One of the few hiking trails accessible by public transportation is the Shirakamidake trail, with the trailhead a 30 minute walk from Shirakamidake Tozanguchi Station along the JR Gono Line, and the entire round trip to Shirakamidake's peak taking approximately eight hours from the station. From early October to early November, visitors can hike through golden-colored beech forests.

Getting to the Shirakami Mountains is accessible via several transportation options. The JR Gono Line connects Aomori's Kawabe to Akita's Higashi-Noshira, hugs the Sea of Japan passing by Senjojiki Beach and all of Shirakami Sanchi, requiring approximately 5-6 hours of travel and offering scenic views throughout the journey. Alternatively, visitors can fly into Odate-Noshiro Airport and rent a car to explore the region. There is no general admission fee to enter the mountains, though certain restricted core areas may have limited or permitted access only. During winter, some hiking courses and access roads are closed for safety reasons.
