Yoshida Castle

Yoshida Castle stands in Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture, as one of the region's most historically significant fortifications. Originally constructed in 1505 by Makino Kohaku, the castle played a crucial role during Japan's Warring States period and witnessed numerous battles between powerful feudal lords vying for control of the Tōkaidō road, the vital highway connecting Kyoto and Edo.

The castle gained particular prominence during the Battle of Yoshida Castle in 1575, when it was held by Sakai Tadatsugu, a trusted general of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Throughout its active military history, the fortress changed hands multiple times between the Imagawa, Tokugawa, and other clans before being dismantled during the Meiji Restoration in the late 19th century. Today, only the stone walls, moats, and earthworks remain from the original structure, though the Kurogane Turret was reconstructed in 1954 and now serves as a small museum displaying armor, weapons, and historical documents related to the castle's past.

Visitors can explore the castle ruins within Toyohashi Park, a pleasant public space that incorporates the former castle grounds. The reconstructed turret offers views over the park and surrounding city, while the preserved stone foundations provide insight into Japanese castle architecture. The site is particularly attractive during cherry blossom season when approximately 1,000 cherry trees bloom throughout the park. The grounds also contain sports facilities, a baseball stadium, and walking paths that follow the original moat system.

Yoshida Castle is located approximately 15 minutes on foot from Toyohashi Station, which is served by the JR Tōkaidō Main Line and Meitetsu Nagoya Line. The station connects directly to Nagoya in about 30 minutes by express train. Admission to the park grounds is free, while entry to the Kurogane Turret museum costs ¥100 for adults. The castle site is easily combined with visits to other Toyohashi attractions, including the nearby Yoshida Shrine and the city's historic streetcar system.
