What other travelers are saying about Bansei Tokko Peace Museum
As people have said, it is a small museum, but that does not detract from the desire of bringing like minded friends here. Aviation history, tests of will power and honor, this place does a great job of
communicating these emotions, regardless of not being able to speak the language.
Smallish museum which covers the army tokko pilots. Costs 310 yen to enter and no photography on the second floor. It's best to use Google translate on the second floor so you can access the material
If you are familiar with the Chiran Peace Museum this is a smaller version of that and focuses on the people who took off from Bansei Airfield. There is a wrecked plane in the middle of the room and on the second floor is personal letters and items from the people who left the airfield. This place has its own uniqueness that is different from Chiran.
The Bansei Tokkō Peace Museum is a war memorial located in Minamisatsuma, Kagoshima Prefecture, that commemorates the 201 airmen who departed from Bansei Air Base on kamikaze missions during World War II. The museum was established in 1993 by Hichiro Naemura, a former flight instructor at the base, to honor his fallen comrades and promote peace through remembrance of this tragic chapter in Japanese military history.
The museum features a salvaged Navy Type Zero Reconnaissance Seaplane as its centerpiece, along with final letters and personal messages from young pilots who flew suicide missions. Visitors can explore personal artifacts and relics from the airbase period, and visit a prayer hall built on the original airfield site. The exhibits provide intimate glimpses into the lives and thoughts of pilots as young as 17 years old who knew they would not return from their missions.
Adult admission costs 300 yen, making it an affordable destination for history enthusiasts. Photography is permitted on the first floor only, while the upper exhibits maintain a more solemn atmosphere where photography is restricted. This policy allows visitors to document part of their experience while respecting the memorial nature of the displays.
The museum is located in Minamisatsuma on the southern tip of Kagoshima Prefecture. It is accessible by car or local bus services from major cities in Kagoshima. The remote location provides a peaceful setting for contemplation, surrounded by the landscape that once witnessed intense military activity during the final months of the Pacific War.
The museum exhibits are presented primarily in Japanese with limited English assistance. Visitors who do not speak Japanese may want to arrange for translation assistance or bring translation tools to fully understand the historical context and personal stories presented in the displays. Despite the language barrier, the visual exhibits and aircraft display provide meaningful insights into this period of history.
