Gofuku Street is a preserved Edo-period merchant district specializing in traditional crafts, antiques, Okayama ceramics, handmade paper, tea, and local confectionery. The name derives from the historical kimono fabric trade.
Most shops open between 10:00-11:00 AM and close around 6:00 PM, though hours vary by establishment.
It features late 19th and early 20th century wooden architecture, locally owned specialty shops selling traditional crafts rather than chain stores, and maintains its historic merchant quarter layout.
English-speaking staff availability varies by shop. Most establishments are small, family-run businesses where Japanese is the primary language. Basic phrases and translation apps are helpful for communication.

It is located near Saidaiji Station (20 minutes walk), Ryokuka Park (15 minutes walk), and Saidaiji Community Center (3 minutes walk).
This is a place where you can feel the flow of history from the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras.

It's a pleasant place where you can feel the slow passage of time.
Gofuku-dori in Saidaiji is now a precious area where old merchant houses line the streets.
It has hardly changed since we were children.
I wish it had been preserved a little earlier.
In the past, it was a lonely place with few people, but over the past 15 years, many shops have opened that make use of old houses, which are common throughout the country.
In recent years, new cafes and even beer breweries have opened.
A marche was held once a year, but it was canceled for a while due to the spread of COVID-19, but in October 2022 it was held for the first time in three years, and it gathered so many people that it seemed like everyone in Saidaiji came (lol).
There were also cute witches flying around.
Saidaiji has only been lively during the Naked Festival, one of Japan's three strangest festivals, held in February, since long ago, so the town has been lively for the first time in a while.
Gofuku-dori has also been used as a location for many movies.
If you like movies, you may come across nostalgic scenery.

★Shopping street with the scent of Showa nostalgia★
If you walk a little north from the precincts of Kannon-in, Saidaiji Temple, which is famous for its Naked Festival, you will find a street called "Gofuku-dori", which is lined with merchant houses with unusual signboard architecture and retains the vestiges of the Showa era❇️
At first glance, the Western-style building on Gofuku Street is called a signboard architecture, and when the eaves were cut to widen the road in the early Showa period, only the outside was enclosed (the reason for the signboard) to make it look Western, but the building inside was built in the Edo or Meiji eras.
There are over a dozen signboard buildings left in the Gofuku Street area, which is extremely rare even nationwide.
Gofuku Street I thought it was Kimono Street, so 5 Fuku!! is a lovely name. It was a public holiday evening, so there were few people around. I hope it becomes a fashionable town.
