Hado Cape

Hado Cape is located at 129 degrees east longitude and 33 degrees north latitude on the tip of the Higashimatsuura Peninsula in Chinzei-cho, Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. The cape forms part of the Genkai Quasi-National Park, which spans across the northwest of Kyushu. This scenic cape offers stunning views of the Genkai Sea with a peaceful atmosphere ideal for relaxation and photography.

The cape's most distinctive feature is the Genkai Underwater Observation Tower, a natural aquarium where visitors can enjoy underwater observation while wearing clothes, with a 7-meter-deep underwater observation room and 24 underwater windows looking into the sea. The observatory tower spans 7 meters underwater and displays 30 different fish species and sea plants or shells such as Black Porgy and Neon Damselfish. The surrounding oceans feature both hot and cold currents. The facility was recently renovated to become Japan's first underwater observatory to introduce 360-degree projection mapping, transforming it into an immersive underwater theater.

Visitors can enjoy hiking, camping, swimming, and other outdoor activities in the surrounding area. From the above-sea deck of the observation tower, visitors can take in views of the islands in the Sea of Genkai. The cape is also famous for its local delicacy of cooked sazae (turban shell), prepared by local women with traditional cooking methods to produce succulent flavors.

The cape is accessible by a 40-minute drive north from JR Karatsu Station via National Route 382 along the Genkai Sea. Public transportation is available by taking the Showa Bus from Karatsu City Oteguchi Bus Center to Hado Misaki bus stop after arriving at JR Karatsu Station. Alternative access includes a 45-minute taxi ride from Karatsu Station or a 70-minute drive by car. The underwater observation tower charges a modest entrance fee. The area features the Hadomisaki Public Lodge, which provides overnight accommodation for families or groups visiting for study purposes.
