Kashi Onsen Ryokan Daikokuya sits in Nishigo Village, Fukushima Prefecture, as the sole accommodation at Kashi Onsen, one of the Tohoku region's smallest and most secluded hot spring destinations. The ryokan underwent renovation in 2009 and is registered with the Japan Secret Hot Springs Protection Association, a recognition reserved for onsen resorts that maintain authentic Satoyama atmosphere despite limited accessibility or cell phone reception.

The main attraction is the oiwaburo (big-stone bath), which measures 5 meters by 15 meters with a depth of 1.2 meters. This bath is naturally heated by source water that wells up directly from the bedrock beneath the bath, which is decorated with large stones and small jewels. The water maintains 100% natural composition with no additives. A secondary outdoor bath called Ebisu-no-Yu offers a different spring quality—a calcium-sodium-sulfate onsen—allowing guests to experience contrasting mineral compositions.

The ryokan provides traditional Japanese accommodation with tatami-mat rooms and serves meals featuring local ingredients. Guests can choose between options including breakfast only or both breakfast and dinner. The surrounding mountain environment offers seasonal scenery, from spring greenery to winter snow coverage. Day visitors can access the baths for a fee, though staying overnight provides the full experience of this remote hot spring.

From Shin-Shirakawa Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen line, the ryokan operates a free shuttle bus that departs at 1:20 PM and 4:00 PM. By car, the property is located 40 minutes from Shirakawa Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway via Highway 289. The ryokan stands along the Abukuma River surrounded by mountains, approximately 23 kilometers from Komine Castle.

A beautifully located onsen in the middle of nowhere. To access the separate bath (外風呂) you need to cross a beautiful river over a small bridge, the bath here is great - Top class. The staff are super warm and helpful. Only "downside" is that the food is not served directly in the room but in a canteen.

The access is not hard, 30 minutes drive from the highway exit on a new national road. Clean building and baths. Simple hot spring, slightly salty, no sliminess. Indoor bath was a bit crowded. The large one over the bridge is unique, huge deep bath tab.

We stayed at this mountain inn during the autumn foliage season. The surrounding mountains were beautiful. The inn's bathhouse and stone and wooden baths are located in a separate building, accessible by descending stairs and crossing a bridge. The stone bath is deep enough for adults to swim in and is the inn's specialty. Local cuisine is available for meals. The website lists special orders, but please note that homemade tofu is only available at the inn. Orders must be placed by 5:30 PM on the day of your stay, and a notice is posted at the entrance to the dining area, so if you'll be checking in late, it might be a good idea to ask when making your reservation. Last time, we stayed in a Japanese-style room on the first floor, but this time we stayed in a Japanese-Western room on the third floor. Both were spacious and comfortable. This is an inn we'd like to return to. Abukuma water and tea are available in the lobby for you to drink after your bath. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. As the inn is a member of the Society for Preserving Japan's Hidden Hot Springs, I recommend making a reservation directly with the inn and having them issue a stamp card. If I had to say something, I was a little concerned about bear protection measures in the southern Tohoku region, as the inn is in the mountains. I wondered if the stonework behind the outdoor plantings on the property was a cliff? Or if it was on the slope of the mountain? I think I would have felt more at ease if they had informed me.

The mixed-gender Oiwa Bath was amazing! There's also a separate women's bath next door, so there's no need to worry! 👍 The bath is simply amazing, allowing you to fully experience the feeling of being in a remote area. The bath is inside an enclosed building, and the windows have screens, so you don't have to worry about horseflies or midges. The water is a little warm and tasteless, but the natural hot spring water makes it comfortable to stay in. The indoor Ebisu-yu bath has a washing area and shampoo and body soap provided. There is only one hair dryer. You can lock your valuables for 100 yen, which is refunded later. The daytime bath fee on a Saturday was 900 yen. *The uphill stairs on the way back from the Oiwa Bath were quite steep. *If you're heading from Shirakawa Interchange on National Route 289, you'll find the Koshi Bridge between the Anshinzaka Tunnel and the Koshi Tunnel. You'll need to turn left immediately after exiting the Anshinzaka Tunnel. If you use a smartphone navigation system, you may not be able to receive GPS signals inside a tunnel, and before you know it, you may miss the corner. If this happens, you will not be able to make the turn until you have exited the long tunnel, so be careful!
