Miyama Kayabuki no Sato Kitamura

Miyama Kayabuki no Sato stands as one of Japan's most pristine examples of traditional rural architecture, preserving a way of life that has remained virtually unchanged for centuries. Located 50 kilometers north of Kyoto City in the mountainous Kitayama region, this hamlet represents the largest concentration of thatched-roof farmhouses in Japan, with nearly 39 well-preserved kayabuki (thatched-roof) structures dating primarily from the mid-19th century.

The village has earned recognition as an Important Cultural Heritage site, ensuring the preservation of its traditional architecture and rural customs. Miyama extends over approximately 340 square kilometers, with 96% consisting of forests, creating a dramatic natural backdrop for the historic settlement. The steep thatched roofs, constructed using local grass and reeds, were designed to shed heavy mountain snow and have been meticulously maintained using traditional techniques passed down through generations.

Visitors can explore the village on foot, walking along well-maintained paths that wind between the historic farmhouses and offer panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The settlement transforms dramatically with the seasons, from snow-covered winter landscapes to vibrant spring cherry blossoms and lush summer greenery. English-language tours hosted by local guides provide insights into traditional farming practices, architectural techniques, and the daily life of rural Japanese communities. Several farmhouses have been converted into museums, restaurants, and craft workshops where visitors can experience traditional activities such as indigo dyeing and pottery making.

Public transport requires taking the JR train from Kyoto Station to JR Hiyoshi Station (44-52 minutes), then connecting to the Nantan Municipal Bus to Kayabuki no Sato (56 minutes). Bus fares cost 1,200 yen for adults and 600 yen for children one-way. By car, the journey takes approximately 90 minutes from Kyoto with about 1,000 yen in expressway tolls, though toll-free routes are available with an additional 15-30 minute travel time. Admission to the village is free, but parking requires a 500 yen cooperation fee for standard vehicles, which supports preservation efforts for the historic buildings.
