I started from Hoshakuji Temple 宝積寺. It took me about 30 minutes to reach the top. Quite a lot of steps - although it was not a very difficult hike it still can be quite tiring.
Nice view, greenery and a beautiful trekking route.
When it comes to casual mountain climbing and hiking, Mount Tennozan is the place to be. 😊
On a nice day, the area in front of JR Yamazaki Station is packed with hikers. Enjoy a leisurely hike, learn about history, and occasionally encounter deer, weasels, and squirrels.
In 2018, Typhoon 21 hit Mount Tennozan, knocking down large trees. The area around the Tomb of the Seventeen Martyrs, once surrounded by giant trees and intimidating even during the day, now has a different feel. In contrast, the area around Sakatake Shrine, home to the Important Cultural Property "Mikoshi-ko" (portable shrine storehouse), founded in 717, now has a more charming atmosphere.
At the summit, you'll find the remains of Yamazaki Castle, stone walls, earthworks, and a well. There used to be what appeared to be a triangulation point for hikers, but now there's only a simple bench. The view doesn't quite capture the sense of accomplishment of reaching 270.4 meters, but eating a bento lunch on the bench is exceptional. 😂
The Battle of Yamazaki is said to have been the site of a decisive battle that determined the fate of Japan, but it was not fought on this mountaintop.
There are information boards placed at various points along the hiking trail, so you can also learn about history. Unfortunately, there is little to no view from the summit, but you can see it from the observation deck along the way.
Frequently Asked Questions
The hike is easy and takes 30 to 45 minutes from the base. At 270 meters elevation, the well-maintained trails are suitable for most fitness levels and require no special climbing skills.
The observation deck offers views of the Yodo River basin and the areas toward Kyoto and Osaka. The vantage point demonstrates why the location was strategically valuable for controlling routes between the two cities.
A complete visit including the hike up, exploring historical sites, and enjoying the summit views typically takes 2 to 3 hours. Combined with travel time from Kyoto or Osaka, it makes an ideal half-day excursion.
Facilities are limited on the mountain itself. Visitors should bring water and any necessary supplies. Convenience stores and restaurants are available near Yamazaki Station and Ōyamazaki Station at the base.
