Nasu Ropeway Sanroku Station

The Nasu Ropeway Sanroku Station serves as the base station for the aerial tramway ascending Mount Chausu, the only active volcano among the Nasu mountain range in Tochigi Prefecture. Established in 1962, the ropeway system was developed to provide easier access to the sacred peak, which stands at 1,915 meters and has been a site of religious pilgrimage since the Edo period. The station sits at an elevation of 1,390 meters, marking the starting point for the 4-minute journey to the summit station.

Mount Chausu holds significant geological importance as part of the Nasu Volcanic Zone, with its last major eruption occurring in 1410. The mountain's active fumaroles and sulfurous vents near the summit demonstrate ongoing volcanic activity, making it a valuable site for geological observation. The area forms part of Nikko National Park, established in 1934, and represents one of the most accessible active volcanic experiences in the Kanto region.

The primary visitor experience centers on the 111-passenger gondola that covers a distance of 812 meters with an elevation gain of 294 meters. From the summit station at 1,684 meters, a 40-minute hike leads to the actual peak, where visitors can observe the active crater and, on clear days, view Mount Fuji to the south. The surrounding area offers multiple hiking trails, including routes to Mount Asahi and Mount Sanbonyari, both accessible from the ropeway's upper station. The station area features an observation deck and exhibits explaining the volcanic geology and local ecosystem.

Access to Nasu Ropeway Sanroku Station requires taking a 60-minute bus ride from JR Nasu-Shiobara Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen line, with buses operating seasonally from April through November. Alternatively, visitors can drive via Route 17 from the Nasu Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway, with parking for 150 vehicles available at the base station. The round-trip ropeway fare costs ¥1,800 for adults and ¥900 for children, with one-way tickets also available.
