Nokonoshima Island

Nokonoshima Island sits in Hakata Bay, just a 10-minute ferry ride from Fukuoka City's Meinohama Ferry Terminal. This compact island spans 12 kilometers in circumference and has served as a rural retreat from urban Fukuoka for generations. The island's Shirahige Shrine dates back to the Nara period (710-784 AD), reflecting centuries of local worship and maritime tradition. Despite its proximity to one of Kyushu's largest cities, Nokonoshima has retained its agricultural character and natural landscapes.

The island's primary draw is Nokonoshima Island Park, located at the northern end of the island. This nature park showcases approximately 30 varieties of flowers that bloom in rotating displays throughout the year. Spring brings nanohana, cherry blossoms, and poppies, while summer features sunflower fields. Autumn offers cosmos flowers and changing foliage, and winter displays daffodils. The elevated terrain provides panoramic views across Hakata Bay to Fukuoka's urban waterfront. The Nokonoshima Observatory, positioned near the island's center at an altitude of 195 meters, offers additional vantage points over the surrounding seascape.

Visitors to the island park can explore themed flower gardens arranged across the hillside terrain, visit a mini zoo, and use the adventure playground facilities. The park includes a grass slope where children can ride dedicated sleds downhill. Cultural activities include pottery wheel workshops and Raku ceramic painting sessions. Beyond the main park, the island offers opportunities for fishing, swimming, hiking, and coastal walks along its shoreline paths.

To reach Nokonoshima Island, take the Nishitetsu bus number 301 or 302 from central Fukuoka (Hakata or Tenjin stations) to Meinohama Ferry Terminal. The nearest subway station is Meinohama Station, from where the ferry terminal is accessible by bus. Municipal ferries depart approximately every 30 minutes during standard hours, with increased frequency during morning and evening commute times. Ferry schedules should be checked in advance to ensure return passage.

Admission to Nokonoshima Island Park costs ¥1,200 for adults (high school age and above), ¥600 for children (elementary and junior high school students), and ¥400 for infants (ages 3 and older). Group discounts are available. The island itself is free to explore outside the park boundaries. Visitors typically spend a half-day to full day on the island, combining the park visit with walks around the rural landscapes and stops at local cafes serving fresh island produce.
