What other travelers are saying about Takaosansumika
Located right next to the Mount Takao cable car station, this shop serves soba and udon.
You decide what you want to eat in advance and purchase a meal ticket from the machine.
You can choose to sit on the first or second floor or on the outdoor terrace.
This time I ordered the mountain vegetable soba, which is delicious after climbing the mountain.
Delicious dango!! One of the best that I’ve had during this trip. Texture was amazing. Glaze was tasty. And only for 400 yen! It was nice and warm as well. Definitely a good treat after a long hike! Would recommend
Surprised to find a Japanese restaurant with vegan options on top of Mt.Takao. It is located on the Trial 1 path with vegan noodles options. The food was okay but little expensive as it is located on the mountain. I bought vegan soba noodles which was worth trying once.
June 2023: had the bean cake for breakfast before ascending the mountain. Was warm and nice. The bean paste was also not too sweet. Just nice!
Also saw the cheese tart and was tempted to try but decided to just eat one snack prior to climbing up.
The downstairs udon is fairly standard udon standard and on the day, there were issues with the deep fryer so tempura was not available which was a shame. It was also really long lines too, so much so, they turned off the ordering machine. Unfortunate was quite chaotic. However upstairs was totally opposite and was an oasis of tranquility sitting high up with a beautiful view of the mountains. Was expensive but worth the break.
Takaosansumika is a two-story commercial complex located directly in front of Takaosan Station, the midway point on Mount Takao's cable car system. The facility houses a souvenir shop on the first floor and a café restaurant called "SUMIKA" on the second floor. It serves as a convenient rest stop and dining destination for visitors exploring Mount Takao, approximately one hour from central Tokyo.
Tengu-yaki is Takaosansumika's signature pastry, featuring sweet Hokkaido black bean paste filling and designed with the distinctive face of a crow tengu (a mythical creature associated with Mount Takao). This specialty item is exclusive to Takaosansumika and cannot be purchased anywhere else, making it a unique souvenir available only to those who visit Mount Takao. The design reflects the mountain's legendary connection to thousands of mythical creatures, including the famous Tengu.
Take the JR Chuo Line to Takao Station, then transfer to the Keio Takao Line and ride to Takaosanguchi Station. From there, walk to the cable car base station and take the Takao Cable Car to the midway station (Takaosan Station). Takaosansumika is located directly in front of this cable car station. Note that cable car fares apply for transportation to reach the facility.
Takaosansumika operates from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM (4:00 PM in winter) and is open daily, though temporary closures may occur due to weather conditions. There is no admission fee to enter the complex itself, but you will need to pay for the cable car transportation to reach the midway station where it's located.
The complex offers multiple dining options including the café restaurant "SUMIKA" which serves original coffee blends and various meals. Since June 2020, they have offered vegan soba noodles made with kelp and shiitake mushroom broth instead of traditional fish-based stock. Additional food vendors within the complex include Mitsufuku Dango and Tenguya, which offer traditional Japanese sweets perfect for hikers and mountain visitors.
