四季有不同風情，其中以秋季時的楓紅最爲絢爛，其他時節或因地點相對偏遠(和嵐山的旅遊熱門景點距離一兩公里)而頗爲清靜。個人造訪過至少三次，基本上是每次到嵐山甚至是京都時的必訪，最主要原因是為其氣氛所吸引，除了環境本身(包括楓林、苔、以及周遭的竹林)或許其靜謐而迷人的氣氛還來自這場域包含的歷史與人文，簡單來說就是個「有fu」的地方。若「長途」跋涉到祇王寺可順訪附近的奧嵯峨(如鳥居本)，回程若不想步行可考慮從護法堂弁天前站乘坐公車。

楓葉季之前來的，寺內青苔照顧得很好，整個園內像是泛著綠光，非常美麗！小小的寺院，嵐山往裡走，遊客較少，舒適清幽。

祇王寺比較多青苔，紅葉相對比較少。寺院很細，很快便看完。

楓葉季的尾聲來拜訪的，主要的楓葉都已落葉，但寺內滿佈的苔很美麗，彌補了無法去西方寺的遺憾。從嵐山過來一路緩上，到二尊院還有點人潮，往祇王寺差不多就沒有人了，參觀期間也只遇到一兩位入寺者。每人300日元，由於有階梯所以我們將嬰兒車放在寺外讓小孩自己走進去，寺內階梯好走，一歲多的小孩可以自行上下，而且玩小石子玩的很開心。寺內整片翠綠的苔地配上一點楓葉很美，如果只是想逛一圈可能10分鐘就走完，如果想好好欣賞待上一兩個小時也不是問題，不過此處無廁所需注意。
