Mitakikei Gorge is a scenic river valley located in Okutama, the westernmost district of Tokyo, stretching approximately 4 kilometers along the Tama River. The gorge has been a recognized natural attraction since the Meiji period, when it became accessible to visitors following the development of mountain trails and infrastructure in the region. Its name derives from the area's historical connection to three prominent waterfalls, though the gorge itself is primarily celebrated for its dramatic rock formations and pristine river landscapes.
The gorge exemplifies the natural beauty of the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, showcasing erosion-sculpted cliffs, clear mountain waters, and dense forest coverage that transforms dramatically with the seasons. During autumn, the valley becomes one of western Tokyo's premier destinations for viewing koyo, or fall foliage, typically reaching peak colors in mid to late November. The combination of vibrant maple trees against white limestone rocks creates the gorge's most photographed scenery. In summer, the cool mountain environment and refreshing river provide respite from Tokyo's urban heat.
Visitors experience Mitakikei primarily through a well-maintained walking trail that follows the river's course. The path includes sections of elevated wooden walkways built directly over the water, offering intimate views of the gorge's geological features. The most dramatic portion features a narrow passage where the river has carved through solid rock, creating towering walls on both sides. The terrain is moderately challenging with some steep sections and uneven surfaces, requiring approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours to complete the full trail. The gorge is reached from Mitake Station on the JR Ome Line, which operates from Tachikawa Station. From Mitake Station, visitors take a bus for approximately 10 minutes to the Kori bus stop, where the gorge trail begins. The journey from central Tokyo typically requires 2 to 2.5 hours including transfers. There is no admission fee to access the walking trail. The area includes basic facilities such as public restrooms near the trailhead and a small number of restaurants and shops in the nearby Mitake township. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear for uneven terrain and note that the trail may be closed during severe weather or winter conditions.
