Shibazakura Takinoue Park

Shibazakura Takinoue Park is located in Takinoue, a small town in northeastern Hokkaido, Japan. The park was established to showcase one of the country's most impressive displays of moss phlox, known locally as shibazakura. Each spring, approximately 100,000 square meters of hillside terrain transforms into a vibrant carpet of pink, white, and purple flowers. The park began developing this attraction in the 1970s when local residents started planting moss phlox as part of community beautification efforts, eventually growing into a major seasonal destination.

The shibazakura bloom typically occurs from early May to early June, creating a striking contrast against the remaining snow on distant mountain peaks. The flowers cover the undulating landscape in distinct color patterns, forming what appears to be a living patchwork quilt. Moss phlox is a low-growing perennial native to North America that thrives in Hokkaido's cool climate. The park's elevation and northern latitude provide ideal conditions for extended blooming periods compared to similar gardens elsewhere in Japan.

Visitors can walk along designated paths that wind through the flower fields, offering close-up views and photography opportunities from various angles. An observation deck provides panoramic views of the entire park and surrounding countryside. The site also features a small pond that reflects the colorful hillsides, particularly popular for photography during calm weather. Local food vendors sell regional specialties during peak season, including Hokkaido dairy products and seafood dishes.

Takinoue is accessible by train and bus from major Hokkaido cities. The nearest train station is Takinoue Station on the JR Sekihoku Main Line, approximately 30 minutes by bus from Abashiri or 2 hours from Asahikawa. From the station, shuttle buses run directly to the park during bloom season, taking about 10 minutes. Visitors driving from Sapporo should expect a journey of approximately 4 hours.
