Yukura Shrine

Yukura Shrine stands in Hakodate, Hokkaido, as a historic guardian of the renowned Yunokawa Onsen hot spring resort. Founded in the mid-15th century, the shrine is closely linked to the birth of the hot springs themselves, with local legend telling of a lumberjack around 1717 who was completely healed of neuralgia by the hot spring water and built the shrine in gratitude. The shrine enshrines Onamuchi-no-kami (also known as Okuninushi) and Sukunahikona-no-kami, deities revered for healing and protective qualities.

The shrine's significance extends beyond its historical roots as a healing sanctuary. Its connection to the mythical White Rabbit of Inaba gives the grounds a distinctive character, with rabbit motifs appearing throughout the precincts. The Nadeusagi (stroking rabbit) statue beside the main hall is particularly popular, with visitors believing that stroking the rabbit while praying will grant their wishes. The shrine grounds also feature a 370-year-old sacred Japanese yew tree, the oldest in Yunokawa and a preserved tree of Hakodate city, along with other protected trees including Japanese elm, gingko, and Japanese black pine.

Visitors encounter several unique experiences at Yukura Shrine. The Hakodate Ikasu Omikuji fortune-telling involves fishing for squid or octopus-shaped fortunes with a rod, reflecting the local seafood culture. The shrine office offers distinctive amulets, including the "Daijoubu" charm symbolizing the overcoming of difficulties, and recently introduced proverb-themed protective charms that blend traditional wisdom with modern appeal. The Good Luck Gavel associated with the deity is believed to bring fortune, health, and physical strength. Behind the main hall, rows of vermilion torii gates lead to an attached Inari Shrine, creating an atmospheric pathway through the grounds.

Access is straightforward, with the shrine situated just 1 minute on foot from Yunokawa tram stop, the terminal station of the Hakodate City Tram Yunokawa Line. By car, it is approximately 10 minutes from Hakodate Airport and 15 minutes from JR Hakodate Station. Free parking accommodates approximately 80 standard vehicles, with additional space for large buses.
