The air is -5°C, snow is landing in your hair, and the water is 42°C. Your face is freezing and the rest of you is melting. Nobody who has sat in an outdoor bath during a snowfall forgets it, and it is the main reason people plan a winter onsen trip to Japan.

The best winter onsen towns in Japan are in the snow belt along the Sea of Japan side and in the mountains. Ginzan Onsen in Yamagata is the most photographed. Nyuto Onsen in Akita has the milky outdoor baths you see on posters. Kusatsu and Nozawa Onsen are the classic onsen towns, with public baths you can walk between. Kinosaki is the easy pick from Osaka and Kyoto. Most of them need a reservation or a timed ticket in peak winter, so plan ahead.

What makes a good winter onsen town?

An onsen town, or onsen-gai, is a town built around natural hot springs. Ryokan inns line the streets, and there are usually public bathhouses you can visit for a few hundred yen. Visitors walk between them in yukata robes and wooden geta sandals.

In winter, you want two things above all. The first is reliable snow, which you find on the Sea of Japan side and in Tohoku, Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps. The second is an outdoor bath, called a rotenburo, where you can sit in the falling snow. Access matters too, because the snowiest towns are often the hardest to reach in January and February.

Before you go, learn the basics. You bathe nude and wash thoroughly before you get in. Keep your towel and hair out of the water, according to JNTO's onsen bathing guide. Many onsen still refuse visitors with tattoos, so check each bath first.

1. Ginzan Onsen, Yamagata

Ginzan Onsen is the town most people picture when they think of a winter onsen in Japan. Three- and four-story wooden ryokan face each other across a narrow river, and gas lamps light the snow at dusk. It is also so popular that the town now controls how many day visitors come in.

For winter 2026-27, the onsen union plans a park-and-ride system at the Taisho Roman-kan, with private-car restrictions and timed entry. It is planned from December 2026 to early March 2027. The Ginzan Onsen winter page is marked as a draft, so final dates may change.

Day visitors book a Priority Pass that includes the shuttle bus. The planned prices are ¥1,300 for the morning slot, ¥1,000 for midday and ¥1,500 for the afternoon and evening slot. Your return bus is set for 1 hour 20 minutes after you arrive. Same-day slots are scarce, and the town asks visitors not to walk the 2 km road from the Roman-kan.

To get there, take the Yamagata Shinkansen to Oishida Station, then a bus via Obanazawa. If you can, stay a night at one of the ryokan. The evening view is the reason to come, and your inn will explain how guests reach the town in winter.

2. Nyuto Onsen, Akita

Nyuto Onsen is a cluster of old inns deep in the beech forest above Lake Tazawa. The most famous is Tsurunoyu, where a thatched-roof bathhouse sits beside a milky blue outdoor pool. In January the snow banks up high around its edges.

Day bathing at Tsurunoyu costs ¥700 for adults, from 10:00 to 15:00. There is no day bathing on Mondays, according to Tsurunoyu's official site. If you stay overnight in Nyuto, you can buy the Yumeguri-cho bath-hopping pass for ¥2,500. It lets you visit the baths at all the Nyuto inns, but it is sold only to overnight guests.

Take the Akita Shinkansen to Tazawako Station, just under three hours from Tokyo. Local buses run up to Nyuto from there.

3. Zao Onsen, Yamagata

Zao is a ski resort and an onsen town in one. Its sulfur-rich water is strongly acidic and smells of eggs, and the town has run as a hot spring resort for centuries. The winter draw is the juhyo, or "snow monsters." These are fir trees coated in thick rime ice on the upper mountain.

The juhyo snow monsters form on the upper slopes of Zao from about January.

The Zao Ropeway takes you up to the juhyo for ¥4,400 round trip. The ropeway also runs night light-ups, but the 2026-27 dates had not been published at the time of writing.

One warning: the Zao Onsen Dairotemburo, the large outdoor bath in the river gorge, closes for the winter. It runs until about late November. In winter, use Shinzaemon no Yu instead. It costs ¥1,000 and is open 10:00 to 18:00, closed Wednesdays. Zao also has small communal bathhouses where you pay into a box.

4. Nozawa Onsen, Nagano

Nozawa Onsen is the best place in Japan to combine skiing with a classic onsen town. The village has 13 soto-yu, small public bathhouses run by local residents. They are free to use, with a donation box for upkeep, according to the Nozawa Onsen Tourism Association.

The biggest and most photographed bathhouse is O-yu, a wooden building in the center of the village. It opens from 6:00 to 23:00 between December and March. The water in some soto-yu is extremely hot, so test it before you climb in and never add cold water without asking a local.

The Dosojin Fire Festival takes place on January 15 each year. Villagers defend a wooden shrine against men carrying burning torches. In 2026, entry was limited to ticket holders, and tickets went only to residents and people staying in the village. Plan to stay overnight if you want to see it.

Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Iiyama, then the Nozawa Onsen Liner bus. The bus takes about 25 minutes and costs ¥600. If you would rather combine powder and hot springs in Hokkaido, our guided Niseko ski package runs from January 17 to 31, 2027.

5. Shibu Onsen and the snow monkeys, Nagano

Shibu Onsen is a narrow lane of old wooden ryokan in the Yudanaka area. It has nine public bathhouses, but day visitors can use only one of them. That is Shibu O-yu, which costs ¥800 and is open from 10:00 to 17:00, according to the Shibu Onsen Ryokan Association. The other eight are for overnight guests, who get a key from their inn.

The bigger draw is next door. The Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park is a short bus ride and a 30-minute forest walk away. Japanese macaques bathe in its hot spring pool all winter. From December 1, 2026, adult admission rises to ¥1,000, or ¥880 if you buy online.

If you are short on time, a private snow monkey day trip by bullet train covers the park from Tokyo in a single day.

6. Kusatsu Onsen, Gunma

Kusatsu is the best onsen town near Tokyo for a proper winter trip. The center of town is the yubatake, a field of wooden channels where scalding spring water cools before it reaches the baths. On cold mornings, the steam rises in clouds over the snow.

Sainokawara has a big outdoor bath in a park on the edge of town. It costs ¥800 and is open 9:00 to 20:00 from December to March. Otaki-no-yu costs ¥1,200. According to Kusatsu's official Sainokawara page, these public baths do not specifically refuse visitors with tattoos.

The JR Limited Express Kusatsu-Shima runs from Ueno to Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi in about 2 hours 24 minutes, and a bus finishes the trip. Highway buses from Busta Shinjuku take about four hours. Our Kusatsu access guide from Tokyo compares both routes in detail.

7. Kinosaki Onsen, Hyogo

Kinosaki is the best winter onsen town for anyone based in Osaka or Kyoto. A willow-lined canal runs through the town, crossed by small stone bridges. Visitors walk between seven public bathhouses in yukata, even when there is snow on the ground.

The Yumepa day pass covers all seven baths for ¥1,500. A single bath costs ¥800. Each bathhouse closes on a different day, according to the Kinosaki Onsen Tourism Association.

Winter is also crab season. The town's crab promotion runs from November 2026 to March 2027, and many ryokan build dinner around snow crab. Limited Express trains reach Kinosaki in about 2 hours 40 minutes from Osaka and 2 hours 20 minutes from Kyoto.

8. Noboribetsu Onsen, Hokkaido

Noboribetsu is Hokkaido's best-known onsen town. Its source is Jigokudani, or Hell Valley, a steaming volcanic crater with boardwalks you can walk in the snow. The town has several kinds of spring water, so many hotel baths offer a choice of colors and minerals.

Jigokudani, the volcanic valley above Noboribetsu Onsen, is the source of the town's hot springs.

Dai-ichi Takimotokan has one of the largest bath halls in town, and day visitors can use it for ¥2,500. The Noboribetsu Onsen Yu Matsuri in early February ends with a hot-water battle in the street. It ran on February 3 and 4 in 2026. Limited Express trains from Sapporo take about 1 hour 10 minutes, and highway buses from New Chitose Airport take about an hour.

9. Okuhida Onsengo, Gifu

Okuhida Onsengo is a group of five onsen villages in the Northern Alps, north of Takayama. Hirayu and Shin-Hotaka are the best known. Their outdoor baths face mountain views, and snow piles up on the rocks around them.

The Shin-Hotaka Ropeway runs year-round and costs ¥3,800 round trip. In winter it lifts you into deep snow with views of the Hotaka peaks. Down in Hirayu, the Hirayu no Mori day spa costs ¥700.

The villages are spread out, so a bus pass helps. The Okuhida Onsengo two-day bus pass covers unlimited rides from Hirayu Onsen to the Shin-Hotaka Ropeway.

10. Aoni Onsen, Aomori

Aoni Onsen is a single inn deep in the mountains of Aomori, known for lighting its halls and baths with oil lamps. In winter it feels like the most remote bath in Japan, and that is the point.

Day bathing costs ¥1,000, after a price rise in April 2026. From December 1 to March 31, private cars are not allowed. Guests and day visitors ride a reservation-only shuttle bus from Kuroishi Station, according to Aoni Onsen's access page.

Staying safe in a winter onsen

The jump from freezing air to hot water is hard on the body, especially for older visitors. Rinse with warm water first, then ease in slowly. Keep your first soak to a few minutes, and get out if you feel dizzy.

Drink water before and after bathing, and skip the bath after a big night of sake. Floors around outdoor baths turn icy, so walk carefully between the changing room and the pool. Many inns leave rubber mats or slippers at the door for exactly this reason.

Private baths for couples, families and tattoos

If you would rather not bathe with strangers, look for a ryokan with a private bath. In Japanese this is a kashikiri-buro, a bath you reserve for a set time. Some rooms also come with their own outdoor tub. Both are common in the bigger onsen towns.

A private bath is also the simplest answer for visitors with tattoos. Public baths can set their own rules, but a reserved bath is yours alone. It also suits couples and families who want to bathe together, since most public baths are split by gender.

Onsen towns near Tokyo for a short winter trip

If you have only a day or two, stay closer to the capital. Kusatsu is the best snowy option within three hours. Hakone is closer still and easier, though it gets snow only now and then.

In Hakone, Tenzan Tohji-kyo is a popular day spa near Hakone-Yumoto. It costs ¥1,450 and takes cash only. The Hakone Freepass from Shinjuku costs ¥7,100 for two days and covers trains, buses and boats around the area.
