Mt. Yashima

Mt. Yashima is a 300-meter-high mesa located in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, Japan. The distinctive flat-topped plateau extends approximately 5 kilometers from north to south and was formed through centuries of erosion, creating steep cliffs on all sides. The name "Yashima" translates to "roof island," referring to its unique shape that resembles a traditional Japanese roof when viewed from a distance.

The site holds immense historical importance as the location of the Battle of Yashima in 1185, one of the decisive conflicts between the Taira and Minamoto clans during the Genpei War. This naval battle is immortalized in classical Japanese literature, particularly in "The Tale of the Heike," and marked a turning point in the establishment of samurai rule in Japan. At the summit stands Yashima-ji Temple, the 84th temple on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage route, founded in 754 CE by the Chinese monk Ganjin. The temple's treasure house displays important cultural artifacts and offers visitors insight into both Buddhist heritage and the mountain's military history.

Visitors to Mt. Yashima can explore the temple grounds, walk along the plateau's rim for panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea and Takamatsu city, and visit several observation points including the dramatic cliffs overlooking Yashima Bay. The Shikoku Mura Village Museum near the base preserves traditional buildings from across the island, providing cultural context for the region. The walking paths around the summit take approximately one to two hours to complete, passing by historical markers, stone monuments, and scenic viewpoints.

Mt. Yashima is accessible by car via a toll road leading directly to the summit parking area, with the toll fee around 630 yen for standard vehicles. Public transportation users can take the Kotoden Yashima Line from Takamatsu-Chikko Station to Yashima Station, followed by a bus to the summit or a hiking trail that takes approximately 50 minutes to climb. There is no admission fee to access the mountain itself or the temple grounds, though the treasure house charges a small entrance fee of around 500 yen. The site remains open year-round with parking and basic facilities available at the summit.
