Oga Aquarium GAO

Oga Aquarium GAO, officially known as the Akita Prefectural Oga Aquarium, sits dramatically along the rugged coastline of the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture, overlooking the Sea of Japan. The name GAO represents Globe, Aqua and Ocean, while also echoing the shout of the Namahage, the legendary demon-like figures central to local folklore. The original facility dates back to 1967, when it primarily displayed local marine species. In 2004, the aquarium underwent a complete renovation and expansion, transforming into the comprehensive marine attraction it is today.

The aquarium houses approximately 400 species and over 10,000 marine organisms, ranging from creatures native to Akita's waters to rare species from around the globe. The centerpiece is the Oga Grand Water Tank, an impressive 8-meter deep structure holding 815 tons of water that recreates the local marine environment with approximately 2,000 fish representing 40 species. Visitors can observe green sea turtles, rays, sharks, and the region's famous Japanese sea bream swimming overhead in this tunnel-shaped exhibit. The facility uniquely displays hatahata (Japanese sandfish) year-round, making it the only aquarium in Japan to do so.

The aquarium's most popular residents are its polar bears, particularly Gota and his family members. Visitors can observe these charismatic animals in dedicated viewing areas alongside California sea lions, spotted seals, and several species of penguins. The second floor features the Hatahata Museum, which explores the cultural and culinary importance of this local fish species. Interactive experiences include a touch pool where visitors can handle sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and other marine creatures. During the New Year season from December 30 to January 3, the aquarium hosts a distinctive event where divers dress as Namahage characters to feed fish in the main tank, blending marine education with regional tradition.

Standard admission costs ¥1,100 for adults and ¥400 for elementary and junior high school students. Group rates offer small discounts. The Oga Tourism Premium Passport at ¥1,100 provides economical access to six local attractions including the aquarium, Namahage Museum, and Kankazeyama Rotating Observatory. The facility operates an on-site restaurant called Furutto with panoramic Sea of Japan views, and a gift shop offering original merchandise. Free parking is available.

Reaching Oga Aquarium GAO requires planning. From JR Akita Station, take the Oga Line to either Oga Station or Hadachi Station. From Oga Station, the Namahage Shuttle bus (advance reservation required) takes 45 to 60 minutes to reach the aquarium. By car from Akita, visitors can choose between two scenic routes: the direct Namahage Line for faster travel, or the coastal Monzen route offering multiple sightseeing opportunities. The aquarium's coastal location provides dramatic views of the Sea of Japan's waves and rocky shoreline, with nearby attractions including the natural Godzilla Rock formation visible from the peninsula.
