Toyama Glass Art Museum

The Toyama Glass Art Museum opened in August 2015 as part of the Toyama Kirari complex, a striking architectural landmark designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma. Located in the heart of Toyama City, the museum was established to showcase the city's commitment to glass art, which began in 1985 when Toyama declared itself a "City of Glass Art" and started collecting contemporary glass works from around the world. The building itself exemplifies Kuma's signature style, featuring a façade of locally sourced cedar, aluminum panels, and glass that creates a harmonious blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern design.

Toyama's dedication to glass art stems from its industrial heritage and the desire to promote artistic innovation. The museum houses an impressive permanent collection of contemporary glass artworks, with a particular focus on pieces that demonstrate innovative techniques and artistic expression. The highlight of any visit is the Glass Art Garden, an installation space designed by renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly, which occupies multiple floors and features his signature vibrant, organic forms suspended throughout the atrium. This dedicated Chihuly exhibition represents one of the most significant permanent installations of his work in Japan.

Visitors can explore rotating exhibitions on the second through fourth floors, attend glass-making workshops, and observe demonstrations by skilled artisans. The museum's design allows natural light to filter through the space, creating an ever-changing interplay between the artworks and their environment. A museum shop offers glass art pieces and related merchandise, while the building also houses the Toyama City Library and a café, making it a cultural hub for both residents and tourists.

The museum is conveniently located approximately 400 meters from Toyama Station, an easy five-minute walk through the city center. Alternatively, visitors can take the city's streetcar line and alight at Gurando Plaza-mae stop, which is directly adjacent to the museum. General admission costs ¥200 for adults, while university students pay ¥100 and high school students and younger enter free. Special exhibitions may require additional fees.
