Kudaka Island

Kudaka Island is located approximately 5 kilometers east of the Chinen Peninsula on Okinawa's main island, measuring roughly 1.8 kilometers in length and 1 kilometer in width with fewer than 300 residents. Kudaka holds profound spiritual significance in Okinawan culture as the "Island of the Gods" in Ryukyuan religion. According to mythology, the goddess Amamikiyo descended here and created the Ryukyu Islands, making it the most sacred site in traditional belief. The island served as a pilgrimage destination for Ryukyuan royalty, with the kikoe-ogimi (high priestess) conducting ceremonies until the kingdom's dissolution in the late 19th century.

The island preserves ancient Okinawan religious practices and sacred sites. Key locations include Kaberu Beach, where Amamikiyo is believed to have descended, and several utaki (sacred groves) where priestesses called noro perform rituals. The island maintains traditional customs largely disappeared elsewhere, including the Izaiho festival, a women's initiation ceremony held once every 12 years, last conducted in 1990. The natural environment features coral beaches, clear waters, and undeveloped coastal landscapes. The island's isolation has preserved both sacred atmosphere and traditional lifestyle, requiring respectful visitor behavior toward religious sites.

Visitors explore by walking or cycling the perimeter road, passing villages, agricultural fields, and coastal viewpoints. Kaberu Beach offers swimming and snorkeling, though facilities are minimal. Sacred sites including utaki and religious markers are visible throughout and must be observed respectfully without entering restricted areas or disturbing ritual objects. The island has minimal commercial development, only a few shops and no hotels. Photography restrictions apply at certain sacred sites; visitors should inquire locally about appropriate conduct.

Kudaka Island is accessible only by ferry from Azama Port on the Chinen Peninsula, operated by Kudaka Sea Line. Ferries depart several times daily with crossings taking approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Round-trip fare is approximately ¥1,600 for adults and ¥800 for children. Bicycles can be rented for approximately ¥500 per day, or visitors explore on foot. Azama Port is approximately 45 minutes by car from Naha via Route 331, or roughly 1.5 hours by public bus from Naha Bus Terminal.
