Maruko Onsen Village

Maruko Onsen Village is a historic hot spring settlement located in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture, approximately 170 kilometers northwest of Tokyo. The village has served as a therapeutic bathing destination since the Edo period (1603-1868), when it became known for its natural mineral springs along the Chikuma River. The area's hot spring waters are classified as sodium-chloride-sulfate springs, reaching temperatures between 50-60 degrees Celsius and containing minerals believed to benefit circulation and skin conditions.

The village preserves traditional onsen culture through several historic public bathhouses, with Dai-yu being the most prominent communal facility dating back over a century. The settlement's compact layout features narrow lanes lined with wooden ryokan inns and small bathing houses that maintain architectural styles from the Meiji and Taisho eras. The natural riverside setting provides access to seasonal scenery, with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage along the Chikuma Valley enhancing the traditional atmosphere.

Visitors typically experience both public bathhouses and private ryokan facilities, many offering day-use bathing options. The village supports walking tours through its preserved streetscapes, and several establishments provide traditional kaiseki dining featuring local Nagano ingredients. The area serves as a base for exploring nearby Bessho Onsen and historical sites in Ueda, including temples associated with the region's feudal history.

Access from Tokyo requires taking the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Ueda Station (approximately 90 minutes), followed by a 20-minute local bus ride on the Maruko Line. By car, the village is accessible via the Joshinetsu Expressway, exiting at Sakaki IC and continuing approximately 15 kilometers. Public bathhouse admission typically costs between 300-500 yen, while day-use ryokan facilities range from 1,000-2,000 yen. Many establishments accept cash only, and visitors should bring their own towels or purchase them on-site.
