Mishakaike Pond
Mishakaike Pond sits at an elevation of 1,830 meters on the slopes of Mount Tateshina in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture. This serene alpine pond spans approximately 15,000 square meters and was formed by volcanic activity from Mount Tateshina thousands of years ago. The name "Mishakaike" translates to "three-pronged pond," referring to its distinctive irregular shape with multiple inlets.
The pond holds significant ecological value as a high-altitude wetland environment, supporting diverse alpine flora and fauna. Dense forests of Japanese white birch and conifer trees surround the water, creating a pristine natural habitat. During summer months, the area becomes particularly notable for alpine wildflowers, while autumn transforms the surrounding slopes into vibrant displays of red and gold foliage. The pond's clear waters mirror the surrounding peaks, offering photographers and nature enthusiasts exceptional scenery throughout the seasons.
Visitors can experience Mishakaike Pond via a well-maintained walking trail that circles the perimeter in approximately 30 to 40 minutes. The path remains relatively flat and accessible, making it suitable for casual hikers and families. Wooden boardwalks traverse marshy sections, protecting both visitors and the fragile wetland ecosystem. Winter access is limited due to heavy snowfall, with the pond typically frozen from December through March. The area serves as a popular departure point for more challenging hikes to the summit of Mount Tateshina.
Access to Mishakaike Pond requires traveling to the Tateshina Ropeway station, located approximately 25 minutes by car from Chino Station on the JR Chuo Main Line. Visitors can take the ropeway to the mountain station, then walk roughly 15 minutes downhill to reach the pond. Alternatively, a toll road called the Venus Line provides direct vehicle access to nearby parking areas during the warmer months. Admission to the pond area is free.
