Otaru Beer Brewery Otaru Warehouse No.1 stands as a distinctive destination along the historic Otaru Canal in Hokkaido, combining authentic German brewing traditions with Japanese craftsmanship. The imposing stone building was constructed in 1924 and originally served as a grain warehouse before its transformation into a brewery facility in 1995. The brewery is overseen by master brewer Johannes Braun, who holds a German Brau Engineer qualification, ensuring adherence to brewing methods that originated in Germany over 250 years ago.

The warehouse interior features a spacious timber-framed design with high ceilings and large copper brewing kettles positioned prominently in the center of the floor, creating an authentic beer hall atmosphere. The venue accommodates approximately 150 seats spread across two floors, with windows offering views of the picturesque canal. The brewery produces three main varieties: Pilsner, Dunkel, and Weiss, along with seasonal offerings throughout the year. What makes Otaru Beer unique is its traditional German production method that leaves the yeast in the beer, resulting in rich flavor and high nutritional value but limiting its distribution to within a 100-kilometer radius of the brewery due to temperature sensitivity.

Visitors can enjoy complimentary brewery tours conducted every 30 minutes between 11:10 a.m. and 5:40 p.m. daily, with each tour lasting approximately 20 minutes. The tours provide insight into the brewing process, ingredients, and the facility's history. The on-site restaurant serves German-style cuisine including homemade sausages, roast pork, and pretzels designed to complement the beers. Beer is served in three sizes: small (330ml) at 417 yen, medium (500ml) at 674 yen, and large (1,000ml) at 1,320 yen.

The brewery is located about a 10-minute walk from JR Otaru Station and can be easily accessed from Sapporo via the JR Hakodate Line airport express, which takes under 40 minutes. The facility operates as both a working brewery and restaurant, with no entrance fee for the brewery tours, though purchases at the restaurant follow standard menu pricing.
