Shiraishijima Island

Shiraishijima Island is a small, tranquil island located in the Seto Inland Sea, part of Kasaoka City in Okayama Prefecture, Japan. The island covers approximately 2.5 square kilometers and is home to around 500 residents. Historically, Shiraishijima served as a strategic point along maritime trade routes during the Edo period, and its well-preserved traditional architecture reflects this heritage. The island's name, meaning "white stone island," derives from the white granite that was once quarried here and used in construction projects throughout Japan.

The island's primary cultural significance lies in its designation as a filming location for several Japanese movies and dramas, which has drawn attention to its nostalgic streetscapes and scenic coastal views. Shiraishijima is part of the Setonaikai National Park, recognized for its natural beauty and Mediterranean-like climate. The island features narrow streets lined with traditional wooden houses, stone walls, and small temples that create an atmosphere of rural Japan from decades past. Visitors can explore the island's perimeter on foot or by bicycle in approximately two to three hours, making it an ideal destination for a day trip.

Key experiences include walking through the historic village center, visiting Kaisho-ji Temple with its scenic hillside location, and relaxing on the island's beaches during summer months. The island offers swimming opportunities at its sandy beaches, and the calm waters are suitable for families. Photography enthusiasts are particularly drawn to the photogenic alleyways and coastal vistas. Several guesthouses and small cafes operate on the island, offering locally caught seafood and traditional Japanese hospitality.

Shiraishijima is accessible via passenger ferry from Kasaoka Port on the mainland, with the journey taking approximately 35 minutes. Ferries operate multiple times daily, with seven to eight departures in each direction. The round-trip ferry fare is approximately ¥1,540 for adults. No private vehicles are permitted on passenger ferries, but bicycle rentals are available on the island for around ¥500 per day. There is no admission fee to visit the island itself, though individual attractions or facilities may charge separately. The island has limited accommodation options, so advance booking is recommended for overnight stays.
