Tsuken Island

Tsuken Island is a small inhabited island situated 6 kilometers off Okinawa's eastern coast, accessible by ferry from Heshikiya Port in Uruma City. Covering approximately 1.88 square kilometers with a population of around 400 residents, the island maintains traditional Okinawan agricultural life centered on carrot cultivation, a practice established during the Ryukyu Kingdom period. The island's isolation preserved farming methods and community patterns largely unchanged by Okinawa's post-war modernization.

The island retains traditional Ryukyuan rural features including stone walls, family tombs, and agricultural terraces representing pre-modern settlement structures. Beaches with white sand and clear waters surround the island, with coral reefs in shallow coastal areas supporting marine life. The minimal tourism infrastructure distinguishes Tsuken from commercialized Okinawan destinations. The Tsuken Island Carrot Marathon each February highlights the island's agricultural identity.

Visitors to Tsuken Island can explore quiet beaches including Tsuken Beach, known for calm waters suitable for swimming and snorkeling during warmer months. The island's single paved road circles the perimeter, making it accessible for cycling or walking tours that typically take 2-3 hours to complete. Local farms occasionally offer fresh carrots and produce, and small shops near the port provide basic refreshments. Stone-walled paths between agricultural plots and coastal viewpoints offer photography opportunities of traditional Okinawan landscapes.

Access to Tsuken Island requires taking a ferry from Heshikiya Port in Uruma City, with crossings operated by Tsuken Kaiun ferry service. The journey takes approximately 15 minutes, with multiple daily departures though schedules vary by season. Ferry tickets cost around ¥370-¥400 for adults roundtrip. Heshikiya Port is accessible by car from Naha (approximately 60-90 minutes via Okinawa Expressway) or by local bus routes from Uruma City. The island has no public transportation, so visitors explore on foot or bring bicycles on the ferry.
