Izusan Shrine

Izusan Shrine stands on the slopes of Mount Izusan in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture, overlooking Sagami Bay. The shrine was established over 1,300 years ago and is dedicated to deities associated with marriage, matchmaking, and good fortune. According to historical records, the shrine was founded during the Nara period and has served as an important spiritual site for the region throughout its long history.

The shrine is particularly renowned for its sacred plum grove, which contains approximately 300 red and white plum trees. These trees bloom from late January through early March, making Izusan Shrine one of the earliest plum blossom viewing spots in the Kanto region. The plum blossoms hold cultural significance in Japanese tradition as symbols of perseverance and renewal, and the shrine has cultivated this grove for centuries as part of its sacred grounds.

Visitors ascend a long stone stairway flanked by towering cedar trees to reach the main worship hall. The approach creates a serene atmosphere as the path winds upward through the forested mountainside. From the shrine grounds, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Atami city and the Pacific Ocean beyond. The shrine also houses several cultural artifacts and traditional wooden structures that reflect Edo-period architecture. During the plum blossom season, the shrine hosts a festival featuring traditional performances and food stalls.

Izusan Shrine is accessible from Kinomiya Station on the JR Ito Line, which is one stop from Atami Station. From Kinomiya Station, the shrine is approximately a 15-minute walk uphill. Alternatively, visitors can take a bus from Atami Station directly to the shrine area. Admission to the shrine grounds is free, though donations are welcomed. The steep stairway consists of over 800 steps, so visitors should be prepared for a moderately strenuous climb. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, particularly during the plum blossom season when the grounds become crowded.
