Nora Dokei Clock Tower

3.7 (524)Historical LandmarkTourist AttractionHistorical PlacePoint Of InterestEstablishment

The Nora Dokei Clock Tower in Kochi is a historical gem. Erected in 1887, it is one of the few remaining wooden clock towers from the Meiji period. Located in Harimayabashi Park, this tower is notable for its English-made clock mechanism, reflecting the international influence on Japan during that era. The clock chimes every hour, a tradition that has endured for over a century.

The tower is well-preserved, showcasing the architectural style and craftsmanship of the late 19th century. It stands at about 5.4 meters tall, making it an impressive sight in the park. The site is especially popular in spring when cherry blossoms surround the tower, creating a picturesque and serene scene.

Harimayabashi Park itself is a place of natural beauty and cultural significance. The clock tower adds to this charm, drawing both locals and tourists. It represents a blend of Japanese tradition and Western technology, highlighting Kochi's historical connections.

Pretty, but not especially remarkable to view. A good story behind the clock.

Someone wrote, "Imagine the Sapporo Clock Tower," which is a very apt description, lol. If you're coming from the center of Aki, I don't recommend the route that turns from National Route 55 at Apollo Station (City Road Yanomaru Kuroiwa Line). It's narrow and difficult to pass other vehicles, and one side is an irrigation canal (without guardrails), which can be dangerous if you're not used to it. I recommend passing in front of Aki Post Office or taking the route that runs alongside the Aki River.
