[Rokkaen (Kuwana, Mie)]
□ Elements
・ Access
A 20-min walk from Kuwana Station (JR/Kintetsu). Alternatively, take a community bus to the "Rokkaen-mae" stop. For drivers, free parking is available. Its location near the Ibi River makes it a pleasant walk from the historic Kyu-Tokaido road.
・ Time
60–90 min stay. This covers the iconic blue colonial-style Western building designed by Josiah Conder and the attached traditional Japanese residence. Allow extra time to stroll through the extensive circuit garden and visit the various historic storehouses on-site.
・ Outfit
Casual wear with socks. You must remove your shoes to enter the buildings. Since you will walk through both the carpeted Western wing and the tatami Japanese wing, comfortable socks are essential. The garden paths are gravel, so flat shoes are best.
・ Stay
Stay in Kuwana City or nearby Nagoya (approx. 20–30 min by train). Many visitors combine a trip here with Nagashima Spaland or Nabana no Sato, making Kuwana a strategic base for sightseeing in Northern Mie.
・ Eat
Try Hamaguri (clams), Kuwana's most famous specialty. Several historic restaurants nearby serve clam shabu-shabu or grilled clams. Inside Rokkaen, there is a tea room where you can enjoy matcha and sweets while looking out at the garden.
