Traveler reviews
A very unique and atmospheric place to explore the history of Japanese cuisine. As Japanβs first sushi museum, it shows how sushi culture evolved over the centuries, with realistic displays, traditional tools, and regional sushi styles from across the country.
The museum is small but charming and clearly made with great attention to detail. There are quite a lot of explanations and signs only in Japanese, so itβs especially interesting to visit with someone who understands Japanese and can share more background and stories.
If you are visiting Shizuoka or the Shimizu area, I definitely recommend stopping by.
Entrance fee: 500 yen
The museum features the story of Jirocho. The meeting place during the Edo period where you can find how they trade and sellchina made products, tea house, alcohol and other Japanese items. There is a show inside portaying the Sushi art. Histories of how Sushi began, the rice they used and the variations and evolutions of sushi. There is also a QR code for english audio. As a tourist, it is an educative visit. On the exit, you will be find Choices of Sushi restaurants.
A free audio guide can be downloaded, so bring headphones. Unfortunately, the audio guide does not provide any information regarding the sushi; it only contains miscellaneous cultural information, such as sandals, streets, etc. If you eat sushi in Sushi Alley before visiting, the museum offers a half-price discount. If you take the time to use a translation app for the sushi portion of the museum, it is interesting, but otherwise not worth the visit.
There are about one thousand sushi theme restaurants in Singapore. 95% of the chefs & staff are clueless about the history & culture. They need to come here to get enlighten.
