What other travelers are saying about Tokoji Temple
Motivated by a video released by Fujifilm, my wife and I traveled 2.5 hours from Okayama to Hagi City. One of the main purposes of the trip was to visit Tokoji Temple. The temple was in a quite original condition, with little painting, maintenance, refurbishment work done to it. However, it did deserve some of the work to preserve it for the future generations. The gardens also needed redesigning and upgrading to make them tidier and more beautuful. The graveyard area was awesome, unique, and impressive, making us feel it worthy to take the trip on such a cold, windy, rainy day.
Probably one of the greatest places I have ever taken photos. The village and area can be so captivating when viewed from outside, but nothing comes close to experiencing it in person. The food, the people, the sightseeing locations, the history, etc.. Is all so real and immersive, It is truly a once in a lifetime experience. Japan, prior to the Meiji Restoration, was such an interesting And unique place In human history.
The temple's main attraction is its cemetery featuring more than 500 stone lanterns that line the pathways to the Mori lords' graves. Visitors can explore the main temple hall, walk through the atmospheric lantern corridors, and enjoy the peaceful Zen gardens. The site exemplifies traditional Obaku Zen Buddhist architecture and landscaping principles.
While Tokoji Temple can be visited year-round, the most spectacular time is during the annual Obon festival in August when all 500+ stone lanterns are lit simultaneously, creating a magical illuminated pathway through the cemetery. This event draws many visitors who come to witness this remarkable sight.
Tokoji Temple is located approximately 2.5 kilometers east of Hagi Station. You can take a taxi for about 10 minutes, rent a bicycle to cycle there, or use local buses, though bus schedules may be limited. Many visitors prefer bicycles as they allow flexible exploration of Hagi's various historical sites.
Admission to Tokoji Temple costs ¥300 for adults. This provides access to the temple grounds, main hall, cemetery, and the famous stone lantern pathways. The reasonable admission fee makes it an accessible cultural experience for those exploring Hagi's historical landmarks.
