Niseko is a resort area in southwestern Hokkaido, Japan's northern island, where Siberian storms drop meters of dry powder snow every winter. It has grown into the country's international ski capital, a village world of lifts and lodges facing the perfect volcanic cone of Mount Yotei.
Grand Hirafu leads several linked resorts on Mount Niseko-Annupuri, with night skiing under the lights a signature experience. English is widely spoken, and restaurants run from ramen counters to fine dining. On clear days, Yotei, nicknamed the Ezo Fuji, fills the view from almost every run.
Powder season peaks in the deep winter months, when booking far ahead is essential. Summer swaps skis for rafting on the Shiribetsu River and rounds of golf, with onsen baths steaming year-round. Buses and trains connect via Kutchan from New Chitose Airport; most visitors settle in for several nights.
