The journey begins with a scenic boat ride across Lake Biwa, typically lasting 25 to 30 minutes from departure ports. Once on the island, guests can walk the stone pathways connecting the religious sites, explore the temple grounds, and climb stairs to reach observation points overlooking the lake. The entire island can be explored in approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, making it suitable for a half-day excursion.

Cruise services to Chikubushima operate from three main ports: Nagahama Port, Imazu Port, and Hikone Port, all accessible via train from major cities like Kyoto and Osaka. The JR Hokuriku Main Line serves Nagahama and Imazu stations, while JR Biwako Line connects to Hikone. Round-trip cruise tickets cost between ¥3,000 and ¥4,000 depending on the departure port, with separate admission of ¥600 required for temple and shrine entry.
