Chikubushima Island

Chikubushima Island is a small sacred island located in the northern part of Lake Biwa, Japan's largest freshwater lake, in Shiga Prefecture. The island measures approximately 2 kilometers in circumference and rises steeply from the water, creating a dramatic natural setting that has attracted religious pilgrims and visitors for over 1,400 years. It is one of Japan's most revered spiritual sites and holds the distinction of being one of the country's three major benzaiten (goddess of fortune) worship locations.

The island is home to two significant religious institutions: Hogonji Temple, belonging to the Shingon Buddhist sect, and Tsukubusuma Shrine, a Shinto shrine dedicated to the deity of water and transportation. The temple was founded in 724 during the Nara period by the monk Gyoki, while the shrine's origins extend even further back in history. The National Treasure Main Hall of Tsukubusuma Shrine, built in 1602, showcases the distinctive Momoyama period architectural style and stands as one of the oldest surviving shrine structures on the lake.

The primary visitor experience involves climbing the stone stairway from the boat landing through forested slopes, passing through temple and shrine precincts while enjoying panoramic views of Lake Biwa. The Karamon Gate, another designated National Treasure dating from the same period as the main hall, features intricate carvings and serves as a photogenic landmark. Many visitors participate in traditional worship practices, purchase amulets, or enjoy the peaceful atmosphere away from urban centers.

Access to Chikubushima requires taking a ferry from one of three ports on Lake Biwa's shores: Nagahama Port, Imazu Port, or Hikone Port. Ferry services operate regularly, with journey times ranging from 25 to 40 minutes depending on the departure point. Round-trip ferry tickets cost between 3,000 and 3,500 yen and typically include the island's admission fee of 400 to 600 yen. Ferries do not operate during winter months, generally from December through mid-March, and service may be affected by weather conditions.
