Mimuroto Temple

Mimuroto Temple is a historic Buddhist temple located in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, renowned for its spectacular hydrangea gardens and seasonal flower displays. Founded in 774 during the Heian period, the temple belongs to the Shingon sect of Buddhism and is officially known as Mimuroto-ji. According to legend, Emperor Kanmu ordered its construction after a vision revealed the site as sacred ground. The temple's main hall, rebuilt in 1673, enshrines a thousand-armed Kannon statue carved from a single piece of wood, which has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

The temple's greatest attraction is its extensive garden featuring approximately 20,000 hydrangea plants of 50 varieties that bloom from mid-June to early July, creating waves of blue, pink, and white across the hillside. The garden also showcases 1,000 cherry trees in spring and vibrant azaleas, making it a year-round destination for nature enthusiasts. The temple grounds include a five-story pagoda offering panoramic views of Uji and the surrounding mountains, along with a scenic pond garden that reflects traditional Japanese landscaping aesthetics.

Visitors can explore the main hall, participate in prayer services, and purchase omamori protective charms believed to grant wishes for safe childbirth and children's wellbeing, for which the temple is particularly famous. The temple pathway leads through forested slopes with stone lanterns and smaller shrines, providing a contemplative walking experience. Photography is permitted throughout the grounds, and many visitors time their trips to coincide with peak hydrangea season.

Mimuroto Temple is accessible from Mimuroto Station on the Keihan Uji Line, followed by a 15-minute uphill walk or a short taxi ride. Alternatively, buses run from JR Uji Station with stops near the temple entrance. Admission costs ¥500 for adults, with slight increases during peak blooming seasons. The temple provides English signage at major points of interest, though guided tours are not regularly available. Parking facilities are available for those traveling by car.
