NASPA Ski Garden
NASPA Ski Garden is a ski resort located in Yuzawa Town, Niigata Prefecture, in the Echigo-Yuzawa region known for heavy snowfall. The resort was developed as part of the NASPA New Otani Resort complex, combining skiing facilities with hotel accommodations. The area's ski industry expanded following the opening of the Joetsu Shinkansen in 1982, which reduced travel time from Tokyo. NASPA Ski Garden is a family-friendly resort with slopes for beginners and intermediate skiers.
The resort is one of numerous ski areas in the Echigo-Yuzawa region, which receives heavy annual snowfall from moisture-laden winds meeting the mountains. The area accumulates several meters of snow during winter, creating reliable conditions from December through April. NASPA Ski Garden operates 8 courses with a vertical drop of approximately 200 meters and a longest run of about 2.2 kilometers. The resort attracts families and beginners due to gentle slopes, proximity to accommodations, and base elevation providing easy access from the adjacent hotel.
Visitors ski or snowboard on groomed runs serviced by 4 lifts including gondolas and chairlifts. The resort maintains separate areas for different skill levels with dedicated beginner zones. A snow park provides freestyle features. Equipment rental services offer skis, snowboards, boots, and winter clothing. Ski and snowboard lessons are available with instruction in Japanese and limited English. The NASPA New Otani Resort hotel provides ski-in/ski-out access. Non-skiers can use sledding areas. Night skiing operates on illuminated slopes during peak season. Dining facilities serve meals.
Access from Echigo-Yuzawa Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen via approximately 5 minutes by free shuttle bus. From Tokyo, the Joetsu Shinkansen takes about 75 minutes. From Niigata City, approximately 50 minutes by shinkansen or local trains. By car, exit Kanetsu Expressway at Yuzawa Interchange, approximately 5 minutes from the resort. Parking available for 1,000 vehicles at 1,000 yen per day.
