The Ultimate 10-Day Itinerary Exploring Tokyo & Beyond

No first trip to Tokyo is complete without seeing the world's busiest pedestrian crossing. Cross it yourself, soak up the energy, then come back after dark when the neon lights make the whole area feel even more magical.

One of my favorite streets to recommend for your first meal in Japan. It's packed with restaurants, cafés, dessert shops, arcades, and stores, making it the perfect place to wander without a plan and simply enjoy Tokyo's lively atmosphere.

One of the best viewpoints overlooking Shibuya Crossing. Located on the rooftop of MAGNET by SHIBUYA109, it's the perfect spot to capture the famous scramble crossing from above.

If you're only visiting one observation deck in Tokyo, make it this one. I highly recommend booking your tickets in advance, especially for a timeslot about 60–90 minutes before sunset, so you can watch the city transform from daylight to a sea of sparkling lights. It's easily one of the most unforgettable views in Tokyo.

Start your day at Tokyo's oldest and most famous temple. Arrive early to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere before the crowds, then stroll through the temple grounds and take in one of Japan's most iconic cultural landmarks.

If it's your first time in Japan, this is one of my favorite experiences to recommend. Rent a beautiful kimono and explore Asakusa with a professional photographer who knows all the best photo spots, leaving you with memorable keepsakes from your trip. I recommend booking this experience in advance, especially during spring and autumn.

Complete your cultural experience by attending a traditional Japanese tea ceremony led by a tea master. Many experiences also include kimono rental, making it easy to combine both activities while learning about the history, etiquette, and philosophy behind one of Japan's oldest traditions.

Looking for a unique souvenir? Instead of buying one, make your own. At Chopstick Studio Asakusa, you can craft and personalize your own pair of chopsticks—a meaningful keepsake that's both practical and one-of-a-kind.

After exploring Asakusa, take a leisurely walk along the Sumida River toward Tokyo Skytree. Along the way, stop at Tokyo Mizumachi, a relaxed riverside complex filled with cafés, bakeries, and restaurants. This area offers a quieter side of Tokyo and is a nice break from the crowds before continuing your day.

Next, head to Ryogoku, Tokyo's famous sumo district and a neighborhood deeply connected to Japan's Edo-period history. Visit the Edo-Tokyo Museum to learn how Tokyo transformed from the old city of Edo into the vibrant capital it is today through interactive exhibits, life-sized recreations, and fascinating historical displays. While exploring the area, keep an eye out, as you might even spot a sumo wrestler casually walking through the neighborhood on their way to training.

From the 3D Cat, take a short walk into Kabukicho, where the iconic Godzilla Head towers above the Hotel Gracery Shinjuku. It's one of Tokyo's most recognizable photo spots and a must-visit for movie fans and first-time visitors alike.

Start your morning at Tsukiji Outer Market, one of Tokyo's most famous food destinations. I recommend arriving early to beat the crowds and enjoy the freshest seafood, tamagoyaki, matcha sweets, and other local specialties for breakfast while the market is at its liveliest. If you'd like to learn more about the market's history and discover some of the best local food stalls, consider joining a guided food tour with a local guide. It takes the guesswork out of where to eat and is a great way to experience Tsukiji more deeply.

Next, head to teamLab Planets, one of Tokyo's most popular attractions. This immersive digital art museum invites you to walk through water, mirrored spaces, and interactive light installations that completely surround you. Be sure to book your tickets in advance, as popular time slots often sell out.

Spend the afternoon exploring Azabudai Hills, Tokyo's newest lifestyle destination. Home to luxury boutiques, beautifully designed public spaces, cafés, and excellent restaurants, it's a wonderful place to slow down, browse the shops, and enjoy lunch.

If you decide not to visit teamLab Planets, consider visiting teamLab Borderless inside Azabudai Hills instead. Unlike Planets, Borderless lets you freely wander through ever-changing digital art spaces where the installations move and evolve around you, creating a completely different experience.

Before sunset, stop by Azabudai Hills Market and pick up some fresh bread, pastries, snacks, or takeaway meals for a picnic in Shiba Park. Sitting on the lawn with Tokyo Tower rising above you is one of my favorite ways to slow down and enjoy the city. It's peaceful, surprisingly uncrowded, and offers one of the most iconic views in Tokyo.

After enjoying breakfast at your hotel in Tokyo, take the train to Motomachi-Chūkagai Station, the gateway to Yokohama Chinatown and the perfect place to begin your day. Just a short walk from the station, you'll find the largest Chinatown in Japan and one of the biggest in the world. Wander through its colorful streets, admire the ornate gates and temples, and browse the many shops as the neighborhood comes to life. Since most restaurants open from around 11:00 AM, it's the perfect place to enjoy an early lunch before continuing your Yokohama adventure. Don't miss local favorites like steamed buns, soup dumplings, and other delicious Chinese street food.

This is one of my favorite museums to recommend because it's fun for both adults and kids. Besides learning about the history of instant noodles, you can design your own Cup Noodles to take home as a souvenir. I recommend booking this experience in advance, especially if you're visiting on weekends or during peak travel seasons.

One of Yokohama's most iconic landmarks, the Red Brick Warehouse is a great place to browse local shops, grab a coffee or matcha and enjoy them by the waterfront. There's almost always a seasonal event happening here too, from Christmas markets to food festivals.

Located right next to the Red Brick Warehouse, Yokohama Cosmo World is a waterfront amusement park that's free to enter and you only pay for the rides you want to go on. Even if you're not planning to ride anything, it's worth stopping by to see the iconic Cosmo Clock 21 Ferris wheel, one of Yokohama's most recognizable landmarks. If you have time, I recommend taking a ride for beautiful panoramic views of Minato Mirai.

I recommend visiting Hokokuji first thing in the morning. It's a peaceful temple with beautiful bamboo groves and feels like a little Kyoto. One thing you have to try here is the matcha at the teahouse. It gets busier later in the day, so come in the morning if you can.

Next, head to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Kamakura's most important Shinto shrine and the spiritual heart of the ancient samurai capital. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and seasonal scenery, it's one of the city's most significant historical landmarks.

Just outside the shrine is Komachi Street, Kamakura's lively shopping street filled with souvenir shops, cafés, dessert stores, and local food stalls. It's the perfect place to browse, pick up souvenirs, and stop for lunch before continuing your afternoon of sightseeing.

No visit to Kamakura is complete without seeing the Great Buddha, one of Japan's most iconic landmarks. Standing over 11 meters tall, this bronze statue has watched over Kamakura for more than 750 years and remains one of the country's most impressive historical sites.

Just a short walk away is Hase-dera, one of my favorite temples in Kamakura. I love recommending it because it combines beautiful gardens, seasonal flowers, and panoramic views overlooking the coastline, making it feel both peaceful and incredibly scenic.

As the afternoon winds down, make your way to Shichirigahama Beach, one of my favorite coastal spots near Tokyo. On a clear day, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Mount Fuji rising beyond the ocean, making it one of the best places to watch the sunset in the Greater Tokyo area.
