Former Moji Customs

The Former Moji Customs building stands as one of Kitakyushu's most significant architectural landmarks, located in the Mojiko Retro district of Fukuoka Prefecture. Constructed in 1912 during the Meiji era, this red brick structure served as the customs house for the Port of Moji, which was then one of Japan's most important international trading ports alongside Yokohama, Kobe, and Nagasaki. The building operated as an active customs facility until 1927, after which it was repurposed for various governmental uses before being restored and opened to the public.

Designed by architect Yamaguchi Hanroku of the Ministry of Finance, the building exemplifies Neoclassical Western architecture with distinctive red brick construction and white stone detailing. The structure features elegant octagonal towers and Renaissance-style decorative elements that reflect the modernization efforts of early 20th-century Japan. In 1994, the building was designated as an Important Cultural Property by the Japanese government, recognizing its architectural and historical value as a symbol of Japan's opening to international trade.

Visitors can explore the building's interior, which has been carefully restored to its original appearance. The first floor houses exhibition spaces showcasing the history of Moji Port's role in international trade, including displays of customs procedures and artifacts from the era. The second floor features the former customs chief's office and meeting rooms, preserved with period furnishings that allow visitors to experience the working environment of early 20th-century customs officials. The building also hosts rotating exhibitions related to local history and culture.

The Former Moji Customs is situated in the Mojiko Retro district, easily accessible from JR Mojiko Station on the Kagoshima Main Line, just a 5-minute walk from the station. The building is part of a preserved historic waterfront area that includes other Meiji and Taisho-era structures. The building's proximity to other restored historic structures, including the Old Moji Mitsui Club and Mojiko Station itself, makes it convenient to explore multiple sites during a single visit to the area.
