Furumachi Dori is a historic shopping arcade and entertainment district in Chuo Ward, Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture. The area developed during the Edo period as Niigata's main commercial district when the city served as an important port town for trade along the Sea of Japan coast. "Furumachi" means "old town," reflecting its role as Niigata's original city center. The district flourished through the Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa periods as a center for commerce, entertainment, and geisha culture. The area features arcaded shopping streets developed in the mid-20th century, providing covered walkways lined with shops, restaurants, and businesses.

Furumachi preserves Niigata's mercantile heritage and continues as a center for traditional culture, particularly the geisha districts maintaining Niigata's geiko (geisha) traditions. Several designated geisha districts contain traditional teahouses, ochaya, hosting banquets with geiko entertainment. Niigata is one of the few cities outside Kyoto where geisha culture remains active. The shopping arcades blend historical atmosphere with contemporary retail, featuring local specialty shops, traditional crafts, cafes, restaurants serving Niigata cuisine, and modern stores. The arcaded streets create pedestrian-friendly shopping sheltered from Niigata's harsh winter weather and summer heat.

Visitors explore covered shopping arcades, browsing shops selling Niigata sake, rice-based products, traditional crafts, clothing, and specialty foods. Restaurants and izakaya serve regional Niigata cuisine with fresh Sea of Japan seafood, locally grown rice, and seasonal specialties. Geisha districts offer cultural experiences through traditional performances and banquets, requiring advance arrangements through hotels or tour services. Furumachi Dori is accessible from JR Niigata Station on the JR Joetsu Shinkansen, approximately 15 to 20 minutes by bus or taxi, or 30 minutes walking. The Bandai City bus terminal near Niigata Station connects via frequent buses. From Tokyo, Niigata is 2 hours via Joetsu Shinkansen. Admission is free as public streets and arcades, though shops, restaurants, and geisha experiences have separate pricing.
