Kuonji Temple

Kuonji Temple stands as the head temple of the Nichiren school of Japanese Buddhism, located on Mount Minobu in Yamanashi Prefecture. Founded in 1274 by the Buddhist monk Nichiren Shonin, the temple marks the site where he spent the final years of his life in religious study and practice. Nichiren established his hermitage here at the invitation of a local lord, and the location became the spiritual center of his teachings until his death in 1282.

The temple complex sprawls across the mountainside at an elevation of approximately 400 meters, encompassing numerous halls and structures connected by stone pathways. The main hall, or Minobu-san Kuonji Hondo, houses important Buddhist scriptures and serves as the primary place of worship. The temple grounds include the Gobyo mausoleum where Nichiren's ashes are enshrined, making it a significant pilgrimage destination for followers of Nichiren Buddhism. The surrounding cedar forests, some with trees over 400 years old, create a serene atmosphere that reflects the temple's long history.

Visitors can explore the extensive temple grounds via traditional stone staircases or take the Minobu-san Ropeway, which offers panoramic views during the seven-minute ascent to the upper sections. The experience includes observing daily religious ceremonies, viewing historical artifacts in the temple museum, and walking among the towering ancient trees. Spring brings an impressive display of over 400 weeping cherry trees that bloom around late March to early April, attracting significant numbers of visitors during this period.

Kuonji Temple is accessible from Minobu Station on the JR Minobu Line, approximately three hours from Tokyo via Shinjuku and Kofu stations using limited express trains. Local buses run from the station to the temple entrance, taking around 15 minutes, with an additional 15-minute walk to reach the temple grounds. Alternatively, highway buses operate directly from Shinjuku Bus Terminal to Minobu, taking approximately 3.5 hours.
